NJROTC Rank Structure

E-1 | c/Seaman Recruit (SR)
Description: None. Assigned to every new cadet in the NJROTC program.
E-2 | c/Seaman Apprentice (SA)
Description: The collar device is Two silver diagonal stripes. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the advancement knowledge and drill exam, or through an instructor promotion.
E-3 | c/Seaman (S)
Description: The collar device is Three silver diagonal stripes. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam or through an instructor promotion

E-4 | c/Petty Officer 3rd Class (PO3)
Description: The collar device is a perched eagle over one chevron. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, or through an instructor promotion. This is the highest rank a freshman can achieve during their NS1 year.

E-5 | c/Petty Officer 2nd Class (PO2)
Description: The collar device is a perched eagle over two chevrons. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, or through an instructor promotion, as well as undergoing a performance review executed by the cadet staff. This is the highest rank a sophomore can achieve during their NS1 year.
E-6 | c/Petty Officer 1st Class (PO1) 

Description: The collar device is a perched eagle over three chevrons. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, or through an instructor promotion, as well as undergoing a performance review executed by the SNSI/NSI’s

E-7 | c/Chief Petty Officer (CPO)
Description: The collar device is an eagle perched over a fouled anchor. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, as well as undergoing a performance review executed by the SNSI/NSI’s
E-8 | c/Senior Chief Petty Officer (SCPO)
Description: The collar device is an eagle and one star perched over a fouled anchor. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, as well as undergoing a performance review executed by the SNSI/NSI’s
E-9 | c/ Master Chief Petty Officer (MCPO)
Description: The collar device is an eagle and two stars perched over a fouled anchor. Cadets may advance to this rank after passing the required advancement knowledge and drill exam, as well as undergoing a performance review executed by the SNSI/NSI’s

 

Officer Ranks 

O-1 | C/Ensign (ENS)
Description: The collar device is a single gold bar. Generally an exceptional third or fourth-year cadet.
 

 

O-2 | c/Lieutenant Junior Grade (LJG)
Assigned to officers ready for additional responsibilities.
 

O-3 | c/Lieutenant (LT)
Description: The collar device is three attached gold bars. Assigned to the most Senior Officers.

 

 

O-4| c/ Lieutenant Commander (LCDR)
Description: The collar device is four attached gold bars. Assigned to the most Senior Officers.
 

O-5| c/Commander (CDR)
Description: The collar device is five attached gold bars. Assigned to the most Senior Officers.

 

O-6| c/ Captain (CPT)
Description: The collar device is six attached gold bars. Assigned to the most Senior Officers.
